| Hello Mr. Hooper, cc: Mrs. Winder, I’m writing about the intersection of E 11275 S (E Crescent View Dr)and S 1700 E. Children walking, biking, and scootering to and fromSunrise Elementary cross E 11275 S on the east side of thisintersection before and after school. My son is one of them. This route is on Sunrise Elementary’s approved Safe Walking Route map,so it’s a designated route for children — but there’s no sidewalk onthe south side of that intersection and no marked crossing at 1700 E. Two safety issues come up repeatedly: At the crossing, motorists often fail to yield to children — my sonand neighbors’ children, on many occasions. It’s most frequent withdrivers turning from E 11275 S onto S 1700 E. And because there’s no sidewalk on the south side, children travel onthe painted shoulder. Sunrise’s guidance tells students without asidewalk to stay at the road’s edge facing traffic, which is what myson does. Drivers use that same shoulder as a travel lane. On Sept.14, a woman in a van used it as a right-turn lane from 1700 E onto11275 S and forced my son on his scooter into the fence. Both come down to children and turning vehicles sharing the same spacewith nothing between them. Would the city be able to take a look at this intersection? A coupleof ideas came to mind, though I’d appreciate your professionalopinion: – A marked school crosswalk with a pedestrian-activated beacon (RRFB)across E 11275 S on the east side- Flexible delineator posts along the south shoulder where thesidewalk is missing, to keep turning vehicles out of it I don’t have pedestrian counts, but I imagine that’s something yourteam could gather during arrival and dismissal if it would help. I’malso happy to meet you out there and walk it, if that’s useful. I’dappreciate hearing your thoughts on next steps. This is the walk my son makes twice a day, so it’s on my mind a lot.
