Adults set lifelong examples for the children at Sunrise Elementary. Sometimes we tend to take risks that could endanger our children, especially if we are running behind schedule. For the safety and well-being of students; families and students are to adhere to the following:
- Everyone follows the directions of the Crossing Guards, Staff, and Student Safety Patrol members.
- 5 MPH speed limit in the parking lot.
- Obey traffic signs.
- No cell phone use while driving in the parking lot.
- Children enter/exit vehicles along the “cone zone” marked/indicated pick-up and drop-off zones (see picture below school parking lot map).
- Please make sure that your children are ready to exit the car before you come to the drop-off zone.
- In the pick-up and drop-off zone, drivers remain in the car. All students should enter or exit the vehicle at the curbside from the passenger side. No vehicle doors should open on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
- If a child is not able to get out of the vehicle by themselves, the driver must park in a patron parking spot and walk the child through the crosswalk to the sidewalk.
- The Kindergarten play area is closed before and after school.
- Bicycles, scooters, and skateboards must be walked on all school property.
Every child has the right to believe and expect that ALL adults are watching out for their safety in our parking lot at Sunrise.

SUNRISE SAFE WALKING PLAN:
Sunrise’s school map shows the safest general routes for Sunrise Eagles who walk to school. Arrows depicting walking routes are shown. Please note the following:
• Students should use sidewalks whenever they are available. If there are no sidewalks, students need to walk in a safe manner, facing oncoming traffic, as close to the edge of the road as possible.
• Students living North of Sunrise are to cross with help of the crossing guard at 11245 S. 1553 E.
• Students living East of 1700 E. are to cross with the help of the crossing guard at 11245 S. 1700 E.
• Students living South of 11400 S. are to cross with the help of the crossing guard at 11400 S. 1475 E.
• Students who ride bikes must ride on the right-hand side of the road. When possible, they should cross at intersections where there is an adult crossing guard stationed, and they should always walk their bikes across the street.
• All students should go home straight from school. Do not talk to, take candy or gifts, or get in the cars of strangers. Any strange behavior should be reported to the school immediately.
• Students who qualify for hazardous busing are discouraged from walking/biking to school on an unsafe route.
If you learn of any safety problems or route deficiencies, please report them to Sunrise’s office at 801.826.9550. Thank you for your help with this important issue.
SUNRISE PARKING LOT & PICK UP/DROP OFF DRIVEWAYS:
1. PLEASE maintain a 10 mile per hour speed or under in the school vicinity. Despite repeated instructions and reminders to the contrary, students may sometimes run into the path of vehicles. Very slow vehicle speeds decrease the potential for accidents and injury.
2. Please note that we have staff and several student safety patrol members out before and after school to help keep students safe. We appreciate your help in following their directions and being respectful to them.
3. If you are in the pick-up/drop-off driveway, please PULL FORWARD. We try to have as many cars moving in and out of the area as quickly as possible and that means that we use the space wisely. Students have been asked to help remind you to PULL FORWARD.
4. Both driveways at the front of the school have two lanes. The RIGHT lane is to DROP off and PICK UP students. The LEFT lane is to exit the driveway. Students MUST exit and enter vehicles from the RIGHT side of the vehicle, away from traffic. Once the left lane is entered, vehicles should NOT attempt to enter the right lane.
5. If you park in the parking stalls, you MUST personally WALK your student to or from the school grounds. This will help guard against your child getting in front of a moving vehicle while he/she is trying to get to or from your vehicle. In the interest of SAFETY, students are NOT allowed into the parking stalls area unless accompanied by an adult.
6. Where possible, please CAR POOL. This will decrease the flow of traffic among students around the school. Although our parking lot and driveway can accommodate many more vehicles than before, fewer vehicles around students is always more desirable.
7. Do not pick-up/drop-off at the west catwalk (Woodhill Drive).
